Pulse~LINK DEMONSTRATES UWB TECHNOLOGY FOR LEADING CABLE COMPANIES AT CABLELABS® CONFERENCE
Carlsbad, Calif., August 10, 2004 - Ultra Wideband (UWB) chipset developer, Pulse~LINK, Inc., recently showcased innovations in UWB for leading cable operators at the annual CableLabs® Summer Conference in Keystone, Colorado. Demonstrations were conducted August 8-10, 2004 at the conference held exclusively for cable operators who gathered from around the world to discuss product testing, certifications, and ways to revolutionize cable technology.
Pulse~LINK is the exclusive developer of UWB for cable television networks. The Ultra Wideband cable technology is capable of providing up to 1 Gigabit of new bandwidth downstream and up to hundreds of megabits of new bandwidth upstream without changes to the existing cable network infrastructure. Usage opportunities for UWB over cable exist not just across the cable operators network, but within the home as well. Over 330 million homes worldwide already have coaxial cable for television and data services running through their walls. Pulse~LINK is developing UWB network capacity over cable within the home beyond the gigabit data rate. Once the Pulse~LINK chipset is in the cable set-top box, it functions as a home gateway to connect consumer electronic devices throughout the home either wirelessly, through the home's electrical wiring, or through existing in-home coax cable.
The ability to offer massive additional bandwidth opens the door to a wide range of new services and interactive content for consumers including true Video-On-Demand, Interactive Television, T-Commerce (Television Commerce), Gaming, High Definition Television (HDTV), Voice over Internet Protocol Telephony (VoIP) and significantly higher bandwidths for data networking and Internet browsing. By increasing upstream data capacity by 10 to 40 times over present cable technology, UWB over cable would also enable transmission of two-way high quality video from home to home on enabled networks.
Approved for wireless commercial use by the FCC in 2002, UWB is the first technology to meet the needs of the digital home by enabling connectivity of consumer electronics devices with significant bandwidth, security, and the quality of service (QoS) required for high quality transfer of data, audio and video, including multiple streams of HDTV. Pulse~LINK is unique in its development of longer-range UWB communications for wireless home connectivity, advancing beyond 10-meter single-room applications pursued by other UWB approaches. The Company's UWB wireless, cable, and in-home power line communications are designed to work simultaneously from a single Software Defined chipset.
Pulse~LINK's UWB cable demonstrations were conducted at the CableLabs conference by replicating a miniature version of an entire Hybrid Fiber Coax infrastructure featuring multiple streams of standard cable television feeds operating simultaneously in the presence of UWB enabled HDTV content.
The cable network demonstration consisted of industry standard off-the-shelf CATV equipment beginning at the "Cable Operator's head-end" where the UWB signal was injected into a standard RF combiner, then modulated onto a fiber optic cable for transmission to a "fiber field node" where the RF content was demodulated for transmission through more than 1000 feet of coax cable and two "field amplifiers." The signal was then sent through multiple RF splitters and into a "digital living room" where both the UWB HDTV broadcasts and standard cable broadcasts were displayed simultaneously. Demonstrations of UWB HDTV content over existing power lines were also conducted at the event along with Pulse~LINK's wireless UWB demonstration which showcased simultaneous transmissions of two HDTV programs from one UWB wireless radio into separate HDTVs.
